Precautions
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground
- Make sure your engine is off. Wait a few minutes after turning it off for it to cool and to allow the engine's oil to drain into the oil pan
- Stay away from the radiator fan(s) - they may turn on automatically, even after the vehicle engine is off
- Never fill your oil beyond the "MAX" - too much oil in your engine can be just as bad as too little
Checking your motor oil and topping it off
- Open the hood and find the engine oil level dipstick
- Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean with a rag, then fully insert it and remove it again
- Look for the highest point on the dipstick that is coated with engine oil. This is your oil level
- If the oil level is between "MIN" and "MAX," your oil level is fine. Do not add any more
- If the level is below "MIN," use a funnel to pour in oil. Add enough oil to bring it up between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks, repeating steps 2 and 3 as necessary
- Replace the dipstick and make sure it is fully secured in place
